Tryouts Dubbed Major Success

Written By: Chris Dailey

FC Monmouth hosted its most successful tryout in the 7 year history of the club on Sunday, March 10, at Count Basie Park in Red Bank.

Over 50 players from all walks of life stepped on to the pitch with hopes of dawning the Blue and Gold jersey this summer in front of the best fans in the Keystone Conference.

FC Monmouth finished 4th in the Keystone East last year and are trying to build upon a large base of returning players.

Monmouth’s biggest flaw last year was efficiency in the final third. Head Coach, John Killick, is trying to flip the narrative and saw tryouts as the perfect way to start.

“We want to be creative, go forward, and score some goals. Everything we had last year was up to the final third. If we can get some goals to back it up I think it’ll give us a lot more success this year,” stated Killick.

Killick was pleased with the talent on display and how smoothly it all went.

“Tryouts were great today. Probably the best one we had. Numbers were a little less, but we definitely had more players than we had over the last couple years so it’s exciting” said KIllick.

Killick is now in his third year as Head Coach of FC Monmouth and aiming to do the unthinkable, win the Keystone.

With the right players to back up his system, Killick is confident in his ability and the club's chances to do something incredible on the field.

Tryouts are the unofficial start of preseason. The two hour session gave Killick a good view as to what he will be working with for this upcoming season.

Although the clouds were out and gray over Count Basie, the rain was able to hold off.

Although rain wasn’t in the air, there was a heavy tension amongst the players with them all vying for limited spots. The technical and tactical ability of the bunch were impressive and left Killick in company with big decisions to back.

FC Monmouth will be announcing their roster shortly with the first announcement coming on Monday. Follow @wearemonmouth on socials to follow along.
